Inflation has always been around, albeit in more primitive forms. Kings and rulers of old would sometimes shave the edges off their coins, decreasing the value of a coin one milligram at a time. A Latin proverb reads "Adde paruum paruo magnus aceruus erit" or, in english, "Add a little to a little and a little becomes a lot." and that is what happened. The value of the coins diminished. Other techniques used for cheating the economy ranged from shaving coins, to rigging the balances to give biased readings, and manipulating how heavy the weights were. All these methods illustrate dishonest attempts to get something for nothing.
Throughout the Bible, God condemns this manipulation of the economy. Through the Prophets, God would give a set of conditions to His people: if you keep the commandments you will prosper in the land, if you don't keep the commandments you will be swept off. don't kill, don't lie, don't cheat. simple.
The Prophets were very fond of speaking against false wights and measures. In the Book of Leviticus 19:35 it says "Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. 36 Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt." God demands that we deal justly in business and in the economy. This commandment does not exclude the governemnts of the land.
Is inflation a sneaky way of falsifying the weights and measures? The printer runs non-stop, like a king shaving the edges off the silver he is oath-bound to protect. No one else is allowed to make money, only the owner. Does Caesar defile his own money?
The Bible tells us, and history confirms the fact, that as the people and their government make immoral decisions, like Inflation, then they will become weak and be swept off the face of the land. Inflation destroys an economy, weakening the people and inviting foreign invasion. as individual citizens in every nation, we must live righteously and deal justly. Thereby we will prosper.
