Truth is such an elusive prize. The human experience is a vast, postmarked plain of success and wreckage. How is it to be navigated? Daily we are confronted with choices. We know we must be wise and take good council if we are going to get through life alive. The difficulty comes in determining what wisdom is and what choice will actually produce the desired result. There is a tumultuous noise of opinions and advice, but it's nigh impossible to separate the hogwash from the gemstones. How do I make the right choice?
THERE ARE A MILLION LITTLE CHOICES THAT COMPRISE A LIFE. Some of these choices are small and indistinctive when seen apart from it's cognates, but all these little choices summed and multiplied arrange themselves into a formidable wall of habit and even personality. Some of these little choices are actually BIG CHOICES. Whom should I marry? What school should I go to? What kind of a physician should I pick? Which is better: Homeopathic medicine or traditional medicine? Which candidate should I vote for? Should I be a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Liberal, Monarchist, or Communist? What do I believe in? What religion is the right one or are they all wrong? What is my purpose?
So many questions and the stakes cannot be higher. Forces beyond our own pull for our allegiance to state, machines pump out marketing faster than our mental machines can process, and the crowds weigh the scales of public opinion. Who has the prowess to define truth? have not the philosophers argued among themselves since the first dawn? Earth is a battlefield where angels and demons wage their wars.
The time has come to choose. to make an effort. Make a stand not to be defeated.
To discover truth the very first step to tae is to realize how ignorant we are. we do not have all the answers nor can we foresee all the consequences or our actions. Realizing that we are fallible is the first step to wisdom. It allows us to clear our minds of everything and helps us to know that we do not have so much as the capacity to know anything for certain.
we cannot stop there though for there are some things we do indeed know. From knowing we know nothing we can proceed to construct the things we do know. Epistemology is the study of how we know what we know. It has a few fields of knowledge which are Empiricism, rationalism, revelation, mysticism, among a few others such as science and skepticism. Through these means we can discover truth.
Additionally, we must have our opinions only be shaped by true ideas. We must not allow our own preferences and self interests effect our understandings of what is true, even if that robs us of justification for our actions. Truth is independent of human interpretation of it. it is not relative, or if it is, it is not relative to us. Trees that fall in forests always make noise despite of witnesses.
We sometimes must work with the assumption that we know what we are doing, making course corrections along the way. For example, a man discovers that he has a disease and must pick a doctor. How is he to choose? Assuming the mans objective is to be healthy agin, he must go find a doctor who will give him the proper advice to restore him to health. He should go look into a doctors philosophies and ties. Does the doctor have other interests besides the health of his patients? He might be more interested in his ego or wallet. Is he making a proscription to fill a quota or to fight the disease? What of insurance concerns? Is your life being bartered over in a midtown cubicle? Who ever said that any congress knows your health better than your doctor? If he proves true in all these questions, then he is a just man and can be trusted.
We all must build our foundation on truth. We must seek it out and learn of it. Through truth and right thinking we will find success and happiness.
