We do not just celebrate our freedoms once a year, but everyday. What would day-to-day existence look like without the protection of life, liberty, happiness, and property? Where would our security be? Independence day is behind us, and all that really remains is spoiling potato salads and empty firework canisters. My family listened to Patrick Henry's speech Wednesday morning. He embodied the spirit of liberty. That day was full of spirit. Today though, what thought was given to freedom's cause?
I have been thinking a lot lately about culture and society, and why so many aspects of American culture are in decline. Soon I hope to write separately about this topic, but today I wonder who in this culture even remembered liberty on independence day. Out of those who did, who remembered her on July 5th?
We must remember that there are many who think that they can control our lives better than we can; and they might be right, provided we are not governing ourselves aright. Liberty requires daily maintenance! Many wishful tyrants would wait a day to spring their trap. Be therefore watchful. Independence Day is over, but independence is not. Look to it's upkeep and all shall be well.
